Posthumanism

Posthumanism is the theoretical position almost no one in traditional circles is talking about, but it is the most potent current perspective in literary theory. It is an amalgam of a variety of approaches, but has a different character than them. If postmodern literary theories are anti-humanist, posthumanism goes a step further by seeing the category of the human as something that needs to er...

This is an overview of the course from its beginnings which charts the epics from cultures that exalt freedom and virtue, through their Christianization and development of what we might call the 'Western values' of freedom and dignity, which I argue are a direct consequence of the Biblical view of human nature being reflected culturally in the countries where it was received as the word of God....

    These lectures have been a great resource! There's so much literature I never got to read in highschool, in part because I dropped out, but now I am catching up. I just picked up Orwell's 1984 and animal farm and saw you had these lectures online. It almost feels wrong not paying a tuition fee for the education you provide here. Dostoyevski, Tolstoy and Nietzsche are next on my list, just in case you feel like creating a curriculum and teaching a class on their works in the coming year lol. Thanks Dr. Masson!

    I remember how puzzled I was when I was forced to engage with this topic when preparing for my BA thesis in Latin American literature (University of Warsaw, Poland). I just couldn’t understand why it was relevant, but the teacher seemed to idolize Haraway (and Foucault, Derrida etc). She didn’t accept any of my ideas because they weren’t political and I had to change the topic several times. I ended up writing about so called ecocritism because it was far more tolerable than feminism (everyone else in my group chose the latter). Literature is one of my biggest interests but when you want to study it nowadays it’s not really about analyzing and interpreting books with a humanistic approach, it’s all cultural marxism- you have to criticize and rebel against something. This is why I didn’t continue my studies and don’t think I ever will, which makes your channel a huge blessing.

    While I like various translations of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, including Tolkien's translations of both, I absolutely LOVE Heaney's Beowulf and Armitage's Gawain! 😊 Tolkien was far more scholar than poet, which is perfectly fine, and he did wonderful scholarship for both Beowulf and Gawain - and of course I love his works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings - nevertheless Tolkien often wrote with a heavy hand and the result is leaden prose or verse in his translations (as well as his own LOTR, though his style fits his own saga). That heaviness may suit some passages of Beowulf and Gawain, but it ill-befits many other passages of both works. This is particularly true for Gawain, because the Gawain poet (aka the Pearl poet) often wrote with a light touch and employed amusement and humor as well. None of this really comes through in Tolkien. But it does shine through and brilliantly so in Armitage. And of course both Heaney and Armitage were offered the British poet laureate. Armitage accepted and serves as the current British poet laureate, whereas Heaney declined the honorific due to his cultural sympathies with and loyalties to his own Irish people. Heaney won the Nobel Prize for Literature, and perhaps Armitage may win it someday. Given Heaney and Armitage's tremendous poetic powers in translating an ancient fellow poet's ancient poem, i.e., Beowulf and Gawain, it's no shame to say Tolkien is an inferior poet to Heaney and Armitage, even though Tolkien is the greater scholar who still produced good translations of both works.

    • @LitProf
      @LitProf 18 дней назад

      Fair comment

  • @pattube
    @pattube 18 дней назад

    It's interesting to know that there is only one single manuscript of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight in existence. Same with Beowulf. Only one complete manuscript exists. And both manuscripts - both Gawain and Beowulf - were almost lost to history (e.g. a house fire almost burned both manuscripts). Compare this with the New Testament where we have approximately 5000+ manuscripts with multiple external attestments and support (e.g. such as early Christian writers quoting from the New Testament). Other ancient works likewise have far less manuscripts in existence than the NT including Homer and Virgil and Caesar's Gallic Wars and so on. So any time someone claims we can't trust the NT, then if so we can't trust many if not most other ancient texts either including texts which purport to report historical facts.

    The God delusion will be exposed near the advent of the singularity whereby we will abandon the flesh. The fantastically-arrogant religious notion of an afterlife will be exposed as the centuries-old fraud it has always been. What religion pretends to do, science will actually do. Gramsci: “Socialism is precisely the religion that must overwhelm Christianity. … In the new order, Socialism will triumph by first capturing the culture via infiltration of schools, universities, churches, and the media by transforming the consciousness of society.” Engels: "All religions so far have been the expression of historical stages of development of individual peoples or groups of peoples.
